SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Lithium Rising: The Race for Critical Minerals" with Samuel George\, Deborah Avant\, and Linda Mendez-Barrientos
DESCRIPTION:The Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs invites you to a special screening of Lithium Rising: The Race for Critical Minerals\, a Bertelsmann Foundation documentary. \nLithium Rising is a cinematic journey through the global race for critical minerals—the metals powering our green transition. Filmed across five continents\, the documentary explores how the drive to decarbonize has sparked fierce geopolitical competition while imposing steep costs on vulnerable communities at the frontlines of extraction. \nFrom the salt flats of the Andean highlands to the cobalt pits of the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, the film meets miners\, Indigenous leaders\, industry executives\, and policymakers navigating the promises and perils of this new resource boom. Whether it is water scarcity threatening communities in the Atacama desert or tribal sovereignty and land-use disputes in Nevada\, the film reveals how the quest for a greener future risks repeating the extractive injustices of the past. \nWith intimate access and sweeping visuals\, the film asks: Who benefits from the green boom—and who gets left behind? \nJoin us on February 25 for the screening\, followed by a discussion with director Samuel George and special guests. \nWe're looking forward to welcoming you for a screening of the 1-hour film\, followed by discussion and Q&A. Light refreshments will be served--RSVP today! \nDoors will open at 5:45pm with introductions and the film beginning at 6:15pm. \n \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Launching the Scenario Evolution Process
DESCRIPTION:Long-term climate and development research depends on shared global scenarios that help us think systematically about possible futures. One of the most widely used sets of scenarios—the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs)—may need to evolve to reflect today’s interconnected challenges\, from climate risks to inequality and biodiversity loss. \nThe International Committee on New Integrated Climate Change Assessment Scenarios (ICONICS) is launching the Scenario Evolution Process (SEP)\, a research community–driven effort to rethink and update these scenarios for the next generation of work on resilient\, equitable\, and sustainable development. The process will gather input from a wide range of scenario producers and users\, and will inform the backbone of climate\, development\, and biodiversity research for years to come. \nThe Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures is supporting this effort by hosting the SEP website and the first global survey. \nRegister and learn how you can stay engaged in shaping the future of global scenarios:\nhttps://iiasa.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NKIEsrYmQjuUW1HIneqbrA

SUMMARY:The Future of International Sport in the Shadow of Milan Cortina
DESCRIPTION:In a world marked by deep polarization\, the stand out as a rare moment when the world comes together. Often termed cultural diplomacy\, this global gathering allows nations to connect through culture rather than politics — through athletes\, stories\, symbols\, and shared human achievement. These moments of connection remind us that understanding can grow even when governments disagree. \nDU’s faculty and alumni bring powerful expertise in international relations\, sport and society\, global media\, and cultural studies that helps illuminate why this matters. This program (moderated by Korbel's international sport expert Dr. Timothy Sisk) explores how international sport serves as a global stage for meaning\, identity\, and connection — and why understanding these dynamics is essential for the leaders we’re preparing today. Join the Sié Chéou-Kang Center for International Security and Diplomacy at the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs and DU Advancement for an evening of open discussion about international sport just ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics! \nDoors to Maglione Hall will open at 6pm\, and refreshments will be served. We'll see you there! \n

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Charged for Change
DESCRIPTION:How do we model a just energy transition — and how can those scenarios shape real policy and planning? \nFollowing the February 4th launch of the new UNDP–Octopus Energy–Pardee report\, Charged for Change: The Case for Renewable Energy in Climate Action\, join the Pardee Institute for a Lunch and Learn on February 5 that dives into the report's research approach and real-world applications. This report uses Pardee's International Futures (IFs) model to explore long-term pathways that advance both climate action and human development. Dr. Chibulu "Lulu" Luo\, Dr. Jonathan Moyer\, Deva Sahadevan\, Mohammod Irfan\, and Dr. Geoffrey Omedo will unpack the data and modeling behind the report and show how UNDP and partners in Nigeria are using these scenarios to inform energy and development planning. This session is ideal for students\, faculty\, researchers\, and practitioners interested in climate\, development\, and futures modeling — and will include time for audience Q&A.
