University of Denver alumnus and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was the special guest at a Josef Korbel School of International Studies alumni event in New York City on October 5, 2015. The event coincided with Minister Zarif’s participation in the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

We invite you to view the video of the conversation between Minister Zarif and Ambassador Christopher R. Hill, dean of the Josef Korbel School. Topics included the course of negotiations for the Iran nuclear deal, current Middle East regional issues including Russia’s intervention in Syria, the global response to ISIS and Iranian-Saudi relations.

Minister Zarif and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry were mentioned in media reports including The Washington Post, USA Today and The Guardian as possible recipients of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. Minister Zarif and Secretary Kerry led the intensive two-year effort to secure an historic diplomatic resolution to limit Iran’s nuclear ability.

Minister Zarif earned both his MA and PhD in International Studies from DU’s Graduate School of International Studies (now the Josef Korbel School) in 1984 and 1988, respectively.

Founded in 1964, the Josef Korbel School of International Studies is one of the world’s leading schools for the study of international relations. The School offers degree programs in international affairs and is named in honor of its founder and first dean, Josef Korbel.
