Pardee Institute and UNDP launch report on impacts of war on human development in Yemen

On April 23, 2019, Pardee Institute Director Jonathan D. Moyer was in Amman, Jordan to help launch a new research report commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme. Assessing the Impact of War on Development in Yemen explores the impact that the conflict in Yemen has had in the four years since the 2015 escalation and what the country might look like if the fighting continues. Using the International Futures (IFs) modeling platform, Pardee Institute researchers created a counterfactual scenario in which conflict in Yemen ended in 2015 rather than escalating into today’s war, as well as three scenarios in which war in Yemen ends in 2019, in 2022, and in 2030. The report finds that the war is setting human development back decades. Meanwhile, the victims of the war are increasingly Yemen’s youngest, with deaths overwhelmingly to children younger than five. The report was written by Professor Moyer, David K. Bohl, Taylor Hanna, Brendan R. Mapes, and Mickey Rafa.
