Understanding Tuition and Cost of Attendance

2024-2025 GRADUATE BULLETIN

The office a resource of official University of Denver Processes and Standards

We strongly recommend all admitted students review this information to be best informed about financial aid, scholarships and processes.

Understanding Tuition and Cost of Attendance

Tuition are the direct billable charges assessed for taking graduate level coursework, instruction and teaching. Tuition is assessed on a cost per credit basis.

The formula to calculate billable tuition is: total number of graduate credits multiplied by the Korbel graduate cost per credit.

2024-2025 tuition example: 60 (credits) x $1,447 (cost per credit) = $86,820

Tuition is not the only expense associated with going to graduate school. Students must also factor in non-billable costs such as fees, room & board, books and supplies, etc. Combining non-billable expenses and tuition charges makes up Cost of Attendance. Please visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship to learn more about Cost of Attendance.

The US Government requires that international students provide financial statements indicating a student can cover total cost of attendance as estimated on an I-20. For more information, please contact the University of Denver International Student & Scholar Services

The University of Denver’s Board of Trustees sets tuition annually. Students should anticipate an annual tuition increase between 3-5%. Korbel is unable to provide an itemized cost breakdown for future academic terms. Students should prepare financially for increased costs in their second year of study. For current tuition rates visit the University of Denver Graduate Tuition & Fees website.

Merit-Based Aid

Merit-based aid is funding that comes directly from Korbel and the University of Denver in the form of scholarships or awards and does not need to be paid back. These scholarships/awards are often funded by generous private donors to support graduate student education. Funds are limited and fixed. Should a student receive an award, it will be announced in the Korbel offer of admission.

There is no separate application to be considered for merit-based aid and all students are considered equally.

Highest Award Eligibility

Students may be eligible for multiple types or Korbel merit aid. For those students that meet or exceed standards for multiple merit based awards, Korbel will offer the single highest award to which a student is eligible to maximize their financial benefit.

Korbel has partnerships with a variety of organizations offering benefits to program participants. These types of awards are considered merit aid and cannot be stacked with other internal Korbel or University of Denver institutional aid.

As a hypothetical example, if a student is a returning Peace Corps volunteer (Korbel offers a 30% tuition discount) and a Pickering Finalist (Korbel offers a 50% tuition discount), the student will receive the Pickering award because it is the highest award the student is eligible.

Distribution of Aid

All Korbel scholarships and awards are distributed evenly between fall, winter and spring quarters. Students cannot recalibrate or redistribute their awards to different academic terms or years.

Summer and Interterm courses

Korbel scholarship, awards and merit aid does not apply to summer or interterm courses. Should students elect to take a summer or interterm course, the should prepare financially. Students should consult with University of Denver Office of Financial Aid on grant or loan options for summer and interterms.

Study Abroad

If a student is admitted into a University of Denver study abroad program, Korbel scholarship, awards, merit aid and need based aid will apply.

Donor Funding

Some Korbel scholarships and awards are provided by very generous donors. Students may see a named scholarship reflected in their student bill. Students will be contacted by University of Denver staff to write a note of appreciation and to learn more about how the award was made possible.

Scholarships & Outside Funding

Students can earn outside scholarships from other entities to bring down their total cost of attendance. Students that earn outside scholarships should contact the University of Denver Office of Financial Aid and the funding source to understand disbursement and any other important details.

Should a student earn additional scholarship, we strongly recommend they contact Korbel admission staff to assist in determining if there is an impact on their current financial packaging.

Part-time vs. Full-time Enrollment

Students must consult with Korbel admission staff should they choose to change their enrollment status to understand any impact a status change may have on their scholarship package.

JumpStart

Students officially enrolled in JumpStart will become eligible for graduate aid when their undergraduate degree is conferred and they officially matriculate as a graduate student. JumpStart students can apply graduate aid to the remaining minimum number of graduate credits needed to earn their degree. Please consult with Korbel admission and financial aid staff to outline the details of the Korbel JumpStart scholarship after an undergraduate degree is conferred.

Dual Degree Students

Dual-degree students often work toward two graduate degrees while enrolled at the University of Denver. This may have an impact on awards, distribution and billing. Please contact Korbel admission staff directly for detailed information.

Sturm College of Law students will take classes in both semester and quarter formats, which carries some financial aid implications. Please contact each school to learn more about impact.

Research Assistantships

Korbel does not offer fully funded research assistantships.

Job Opportunities

Korbel students have plenty of opportunity to earn paid work including paid research work. Information about paid research and other work opportunities will be provided over the summer months via email to deposited students. However, Korbel does not guarantee job placement and student should prepare financially.

For US domestic students, this aid often comes in the form of student loans. Students need to complete a FASFA form to be considered. This process is managed by the University of Denver Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship Programs. Korbel is not involved in the administration of the federal loan process.

Students can combine merit-based aid and need-based aid.

International students may be eligible for loans as well. They should contact the
