General George W. Casey

General George W. Casey Jr. is a distinguished retired four-star general and prominent leader in international relations, civil-military relations, and public policy. A University of Denver alumnus, General Casey earned an MA in International Studies from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service. During his military career, General Casey served as the 36th Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 2007 until his retirement in April 2011. Prior to this role, he was the commanding general of the Multi-National Force in Iraq, overseeing coalition efforts to stabilize the region.

General Casey remains actively engaged with the University of Denver community. Since 2014, he has taught a graduate course on civil-military relations at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies each spring. The Casey Leadership Scholars Program, established in his honor by DU Trustee Craig Harrison and family, fosters leadership development among graduate students pursuing careers in international relations and public policy.

In 2022, General Casey joined the University of Denver Board of Trustees. He also serves as a distinguished senior lecturer of leadership at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, chairman of the board of the United Service Organizations (USO), and a board member of RISE, an organization dedicated to advancing racial justice and equity through sports.
General Casey’s exceptional leadership and dedication continue to inspire future generations of leaders in the fields of global policy, military strategy, and organizational leadership.
