Teaching Professor

Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs

Sandy Johnson is the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs and a Teaching Professor, as well as Director of the Global Health Affairs certificate program. She teaches across undergraduate and graduate levels, offering courses on international development, global health and health equity, and sustainability. Dr. Johnson’s research and teaching explore how social and environmental change interact to shape human well-being. Her recent projects examine the dynamic relationships between development policy, conflict, and health outcomes—from local to global scales. This includes work on the long-term impacts of conflict on health and human development. With an interdisciplinary background spanning development economics, geography, medical anthropology, and social epidemiology.

Dr. Johnson has studied a wide range of health and development issues, including malaria, HIV/AIDS, substance use, and health disparities. Her book Challenges in Health and Development (2nd ed., Springer Nature) interrogates the “chicken-or-egg” relationship between macroeconomic growth and health investment in driving human development.
