Beyond the war zone: How might Middle East conflict deepen global poverty and undernutrition?

How might conflict in the Middle East put food and basic needs out of reach thousands of miles beyond the war zone?
Join the Pardee Institute for a Lunch and Learn on research conducted in collaboration with UN Women examining the conflict’s potential effects on poverty and food insecurity worldwide. Through changes in energy prices, trade, and food costs, disruptions can reach far beyond the countries experiencing violence, with consequences shaped by existing inequalities and countries’ economic dependencies.
The presentation will share findings from shorter and longer conflict scenarios, explain how the International Futures (IFs) model estimates these effects, and consider how policy responses can reduce hardship. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how regional conflict can translate into global consequences—and what scenario analysis can tell us about risks, uncertainty, and response options.
