International Studies FAQs

INS is intentionally interdisciplinary and welcomes applicants from any academic background. Strong motivation to engage global issues is the key requirement. The curriculum includes foundational coursework that prepares students to engage with international political and economic analysis.

Students examine global politics, economics, governance, security, development, human rights, and environmental issues through a flexible curriculum. The degree is ideal for applicants seeking broad, customizable training in global affairs.

Students benefit from interdisciplinary training and access to Korbel’s full range of globally focused courses, research centers, practitioner faculty, and professional networks.

Very. INS offers one of Korbel’s most customizable pathways. Students can specialize in regions or themes such as diplomacy, international organizations, conflict, global health, or global governance.

Graduates work in international nonprofits, government agencies, global business, think tanks, humanitarian organizations, diplomacy, and policy analysis roles.

Most students participate in internships, study abroad opportunities, research assistantships, or field-based coursework. The Korbel in D.C. program is also open to INS students.

Students can choose to complete an optional thesis or substantial research paper. Faculty advisors guide students in selecting the best option based on career goals.

Students may participate in international field courses, research trips, or internships depending on faculty-led offerings each year. These experiences vary but often include work on conflict, development, or human rights issues.

The MA in International Studies offers the broadest range of interdisciplinary pathways. Students who want a defined professional track often choose programs like International Security, International Development, or Human Rights. Students seeking broader intellectual flexibility or who want to combine topics often choose International Studies.

Quantitative skills are not required for admission, though students will encounter analytical coursework. Those seeking more technical training can incorporate methods, statistics, or data-analysis electives.

Applicants submit transcripts, a statement of purpose, résumé/CV, two letters of recommendation, and optional GRE scores. English-language proficiency scores are required for international applicants. View additional details and timelines here.
