Congratulations to the following faculty and staff members who received grants and awards in May 2019:

Daniel Brisson, professor at the Graduate School of Social Work and executive director of the Burnes Center on Poverty and Homelessness

• Grant from the City and County of Denver for "Parents and Children Bonding: JAG Award"
• Project abstract: Research Confirms that parental behavior can increase an adolescent's risk of delinquency. This project will provide families with evidence-informed services to reduce the likelihood that adolescents will become delinquent, and to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Lynn Schofield Clark, professor and chair of the Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Rebecca Arno, director of the Barton Institute for Philanthropy and Social Enterprise

• Grant from the Bonfils Stanton-Foundation for "Colorado Media Project — Collaborative Cultural Hub and Cultural Journalism"
• Project abstract: Colorado Media Project (housed within DU's Project X-ITE) will work in collaboration with Colorado news organizations and arts and cultural institutions to conduct quantitative and qualitative research on coverage gaps on arts and culture, and host community events and conduct other activities to share this information with the public.

• Grants from the Gates Family Foundation for "Colorado Media Project I" and "Colorado Media Project II"
• Project abstract: Colorado Media Project is an ecosystem-level convener, facilitator and coordinator that will work to bring capacity-building expertise and implementation support to local news outlets as they seek to address gaps and galvanize broader community engagement and investment in public service journalism, as a means to meeting the local news and information needs of Coloradans.

• Grant from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation for "Colorado Media Project — CPR/Denverite Initiative"
• Project abstract: Colorado Media Project will assist with the acquisition of the Denverite by CPR. They will support the business transition and increased arts-related reporting growing from the CPR/Denverite initiative.

Laurel Eckhouse, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

• Grant from Massachusetts Institute of Technology for "Finding Families Affected by Felon Disfranchisement"
• Project abstract: The team of researchers will study spousal disenfranchisement (seeing one's spouse become legally unable to vote because of a felony conviction) in Florida. They will be able to characterize how people subject to "spousal disenfranchisement" voted both before and after this experience.

Wyndol Furman, John Evans professor and director of clinical training in the Department of Psychology at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

• Grant from Research, Evaluation & Social Sci, subaward from the National Institutes of Health for "A Mobile Game App to Support Adolescents in Building Healthy Relationships with Parents, Peers and Romantic Partners"
• Project abstract: Furman will help in the development of smartphone games focusing on healthy relationships for early adolescents. Furman will provide input, select measures for assessment and evaluate the outcome of assessment.

Donald Gerke, assistant professor at the Graduate School of Social Work

• Grant from Washington University-St. Louis, subaward from HRSA for "HRSA Subcontract through Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis 2"
• Project abstract: Donald Gerke will evaluate and analyze the WithU Peer Navigator program from Washington University School of Medicine HIV clinics. He will review the effectiveness of a structured peer navigator program plus unusual care vs. usual care only for a group of young black men who have sex with men, who are living with HIV and are at risk for poor outcomes.

Amin Khodaei, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Ritchie College of Engineering and Computer Science

Kevin Morris, research associate professor at the Graduate School of Social Work, affiliated with the Institute for Human-Animal Connection

• Grant from Empowering the Parent to Empower the Child for "Evaluating the Impacts of 'The Grooming Project on Low Income Parents and their Children; Moving Families Out of Poverty'"
• Project abstract: Single mothers are disproportionately impacted by generational poverty in Kansas City. This project will study the effectiveness of the Grooming Project, which is devoted to helping families break the cycle of poverty by providing job training in the high-pay field of pet grooming, as well as soft-skills training, parenting classes and wrap-around services in coordination with community partners.

Donald New, senior project manager at the Applied Research Technology Institute at the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science
