Journal of Contemporary China Announces Inaugural Annual John and Vivian Sabel Award

he Journal of Contemporary China has awarded the inaugural Annual John and Vivian Sabel Award for best article to Professor Benjamin van Rooij of the University of California, Irvine. 

Professor van Rooij's article, "The People Vs. Pollution: Understanding Citizen Action against Pollution in China," was published in the Journal of Contemporary China, 19, no. 63 (2010). The journal is the number one-ranked China study journal in the world. 

Van Rooij is the John S. & Marilyn Long Chair Professor and director of the Long U.S.-China Institute at the University of California, Irvine. The award reception and dinner is scheduled to take place at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies on May 4, 2016. Ambassador Chas Freeman, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Dr. Carla Freeman, Director of Foreign Policy Institute at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University, will be the dinner speakers.
