Our founder and senior scientist, Barry Hughes, traveled to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle for a scenarios workshop on May 17. The workshop participants met to discuss key issues in developing future scenarios for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project, hosted at the IHME. In addition to dealing with conceptual issues around futures language, Barry and fellow participants explored potential policy questions that the reference and alternative scenarios might help answer. Other workshop attendees included modeling and health experts from the National Institutes of Health, the World Bank Group, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Government of Singapore, the Brazilian Ministry of Health, Africa Centers for Disease Control, UNAIDS, as well as other public health researchers from universities around the world. Randall Kuhn, former associate professor at the Josef Korbel School and one of the co-authors of our Patterns of Potential Human Progress (PPHP) volume, Improving Global Health, was also a workshop participant.

Previous work produced by the GBD was crucial in the development of the health module in IFs, and we continue to use the data collected for our health forecasts. For more on the project, please visit the Global Burden of Disease website.
