DU Retains R1 Status

The University of Denver (DU) has reaffirmed its place among the nation’s top research universities with its recent recognition as an R1 institution. First awarded this distinction in 2021, DU has now solidified its standing as an elite research university by meeting the rigorous criteria set by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. To maintain R1 status, DU spends at least $50 million annually on research and awards a minimum of 70 doctoral degrees. This achievement reflects DU’s commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation across disciplines, with a strong emphasis on the teacher-scholar model that defines its academic excellence.
The Pardee Institute for International Futures, is but one of many organized research units within DU that contributes to the university’s R1 status. The Pardee Institute has an extensive portfolio of sponsored research activities that goes back decades, and every dollar spent driving that research helps DU maintain its R1 status.
Focused on addressing global challenges through interdisciplinary research, the Pardee Institute explores issues ranging from international security and climate change to economic development and technology. Intergovernmental and governmental organizations, senior policy leaders, decision-makers, practitioners, and other research sponsors engage Pardee because of its innovative approach to exploring and addressing these and other pressing global issues.
Pardee’s International Futures (IFs) tool is a prime example of that innovative approach. The IFs platform is the only open-source integrated assessment platform and forecasting tool that uses a hybrid approach of systems dynamics, econometrics, and other quantitative techniques to forecast an array of interconnected, macro-level variables across human, social, and natural systems for 188 countries in one-year time steps through as far as the year 2100. This holistic view allows for more accurate and comprehensive assessments of policy impacts and long-term outcomes, considering both direct and indirect effects.
The Pardee Institute, through its Diplometrics program and other related works, also specializes in building custom data tools and analysis designed to aid practitioners and policymakers.
These activities help DU to expand its research impact and enhance its capacity to contribute to pressing global issues.
DU’s success in achieving and maintaining its R1 status is also a testament to the dedication and hard work of the university’s scholars. With ongoing support for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates, the Pardee Institute, alongside the University of Denver, is poised to continue making significant contributions to global knowledge.
